GST Rates Structure - Taxes Rates on Goods and Services under GST

The final GST rates are announced by the GST Council on 19th May 2017 in 14th GST Council Meeting at Srinagar. The council has broadly keep the rates in 5 categories and these are Nil, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%.

The Government has decided to keep a large number of Items under 18% slab and in total 1211 items are categorised under 5 slabs. Here is the glimpse of the division of items and services:

  • Fresh Meat, Fish, Chicken, Eggs, Milk, Butter Milk, Curd
  • Natural Honey, Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
  • Flour, Besan, Bread, Prasad, Salt
  • Bindi, Sindoor, Bangles, Handloom
  • Stamps, Judicial Papers, Printed Books, Newspapers
  • Hotels and lodges with tariff below Rs 1,000
  • Education Services

  • Branded Paneer, Frozen vegetables, Mithai, Sweets
  • Coffee (Except Instant), Tea, Spices, Pizza bread, Rusk, Sabudana, Sugar, Edible Oil

  • Medicines, Stent, Lifeboats
  • Tour Operator Services
  • Transport of Goods and Passengers by Rail (Other than Sleeper class)
  • Goods Transportation Agency (GTA)
  • Economy Class Air Travel

  • Computers, Cell Phones
  • Iron and Steel Utensils
  • Butter and other fats (ghee, butter oil, etc.) and oils derived from milk; dairy spreads
  • Cheese
  • Dry Fruits
  • Non AC Restaurant and not having Liquor License
  • Hotels Tariff in B/w Rs. 1000 to Rs. 2500
  • Real Estate
  • Business Class Air Travel

  • Most of the Items comes under this slab
  • Flavoured Refined Sugar, Pasta, Cornflakes, Pastries and Cakes, Preserved Vegetables
  • Jams, Sauces, Soups, Ice Cream, Instant food mixes, Mineral water, Tissues, Envelopes
  • Tampons, Note books, Steel products, Printed circuits 
  • Camera, Speakers and Monitors
  • Hair Oil, Toothpaste and Soaps
  • Capital goods and Industrial Intermediaries
  • AC Restaurant having Liquor License
  • IT Services
  • Work Contracts
  • Financial, CA Services
  • Hotels Tariff in B/w Rs. 2500 to Rs. 5000

  • Small and Mid SiMid-Size(+1% or 3% cess)
  • Luxury Cars and High-End Motorcycles (+15% cess)
  • Pan masala, Aerated water, Cigarettes (+15% Cess)
  • Deodorants, Shaving Creams, Aftershave, Hair Shampoo, Dye
  • Sunscreen, Wallpaper, Ceramic Tiles
  • Water heaterHeaterwasher, Weighing machine
  • Washing machine, ATM, Vending Machines, Vacuum cleaner

Although, Government has tried to give the common person a relief by putting most of the consumer price index items under Nil tax rate category, in order to provide goods to the common man at affordable prices.

Also, most of the products which are previously taxed nearly 28% which are commonly used items include FMCG products will now come under 18% slab rate.
