GST Registration opens – GST migration Process to reopen on 25th June, 2017 for VAT and Service tax dealers

The GST registration (migration) window shall reopen on 25th June, 2017 and all the existing taxable assessee registered under VAT, excise law, service tax can enroll themselves under GST.

Earlier the window was opened on 1st June, 2017 to 15th June, 2017 to provide opportunity to leave out assessee’s. However, since still a substantial percent of taxpayers still remaining to be migrated under GST, the government has decided to reopen the GST migration window to give chance to remaining taxpayers.

 

Status of migration till date

As per government sources, there are more than 80 lakh taxpayers in the country and out of which 64 lakh has already been migrated. Hence, the remaining 16 lakh taxpayers shall be given another opportunity to migrate under GST in India.

Therefore the government has decided to reopen the GST registration window on 25th June, 2017.

 

Who all are required to migrate?

Every existing registered taxpayer is required to migrate under GST to continue the business under GST regime. If he does not get migrated under GST, then his registration under VAT, excise, or service tax shall stand cancelled.

Further, if there is any assessee registered under VAT or service tax and his total annual revenue is less than Rs.20 lakh within the state, then he does not require any GST migration and he can let his registration certificate cancelled. However, if he wants to remain registered or wants to take benefit of input tax credit, then he is liable to register (migrate) under GST.
